The Christmas holidays offer a plethora of activities considerably more enjoyable than scanning the latest news: unwrapping gifts, getting stuffed on holiday treats, and using patience techniques to not arguing with loved ones. Hopefully you were able to accomplish all these things and more. However, the entertainment world doesn't take a break, and this is notably true for the realm of anime. Numerous thrilling developments surfaced during the festive period, and should you missed any, here is a roundup of the most exciting bits.
Perhaps the most shocking revelation, the notorious troubled production that was season 3 of One-Punch Man failed to deter more episodes. Season 3 will come back with a second cour in 2027—so far away they easily could have called it season 4. Adding to the surprise, animation studio J.C. Staff will remain leading the project. At least this time, director Shinpei Nagai is on board to direct from the beginning, which might be a good sign. But, the main art for the new episodes is a mirror of the one used for season 3, just with characters Saitama and Garou oriented differently. This suggests that, by now, they must be teasing the fans.
Kyoto Animation has built a standing for being an top-tier animation studio, making its mark not just for the high caliber of its output but for the fair treatment of its employees—a rarity in the industry. Surprisingly, until now, it had not produced an anime based on a manga serialized in Shonen Jump, possibly the most iconic magazine in the field. Ruri Dragon will end that streak, and what a superb choice it is. The manga by Masaoki Shindo gained widespread acclaim when it first appeared in 2022 after just a handful of installments, but then went into a two-year hiatus due to the author's health issues. When it came back with a lighter schedule, the series showed it maintained the fans' appreciation and goodwill, and now the community is thrilled about the forthcoming KyoAni adaptation.
Kingdom is the highly popular, decades-spanning Shueisha manga that is not One Piece. If you've haven't come across it before, it's because it only fairly recently obtained an English release, but the anime has been running for a while, and season 6 was another outstanding entry. Apparently that was just the first half, because a "sequel" has been revealed as in production, and it will very likely air in 2026.
Another studio known for the artistic merit of its productions, Science Saru has brought us hit shows of the quality of Space Dandy, Devilman Crybaby, and, more recently, Dandadan. This time, the studio will be producing the adaptation of Tomato Soup's manga A Witch's Life in Mongol, which is based on the actual historical person of Fatima, an prominent woman and scholar in the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. Based on the trailer, the anime titled Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia will have a highly unique and captivating visual style, which reminds me a bit of Ranking of Kings. Set to premiere in July 2026, this one will without a doubt be on my list of anticipated shows.
Shortly after the airing of its twenty-fourth episode, it was announced that Tougen Anki will be getting a sequel. Inspired by the Japanese legend of Momotaro, Tougen Anki is based on the manga by Yura Urushibara. The upcoming season of the anime will cover the Nikko Kegon Falls Arc, but a firm air date has not yet been announced.
