Leadership Change
Summers stated he would retreat from public positions after House committee disclosed his frequent correspondence with Epstein

Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is departing from the directorate at OpenAI, just a week after a batch of electronic messages between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became public.

He stated in a release that he was "grateful for the chance to have contributed, enthusiastic about the potential of the enterprise, and eagerly await following their progress".

The former Harvard president, who once presided over the Ivy League institution, declared on recently that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his association with Epstein.

Message Exchange

The recently released messages revealed that Summers communicated with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 arrest for suspected human trafficking of young people.

In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company said it understood the economist's choice to resign.

"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the perspective he provided to the Board," OpenAI commented.

Legislative Background

This news comes after both chambers of the US legislature agreed on this week to approve a bill that would require the federal prosecutors to disclose its records on Epstein.

The measure will then head to the office of President Trump for approval. Trump has stated he expects to approve the legislation, after changing his position on the issue following pushback from his supporters.

Correspondence Findings

A batch of Epstein-connected messages made public by the legislative panel days ago referenced several prominent individuals in the Epstein's former circle, without suggesting any criminal activity by those people.

The messages indicated that Summers and Epstein often met for meals, with the billionaire often attempting to connect the academic to prominent international personalities.

Individual Statement

After the correspondence were shared with the general audience, Summers said he assumed "full responsibility for my poor choice to continue interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".

He continued that he hoped "to rebuild trust and mend bonds with the persons most important to me".

Career Background

The economist served in senior posts under Democratic administrations; serving as economic leader under the former president, and as director of the economic advisory body under President Obama.

He led the university from the early 2000s and is still a professor there. When declaring his departure from public roles earlier on Monday, he indicated he would maintain his teaching commitments.

Additional Consequences

Following Summers' statement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a liberal policy institute in the capital where he was a senior fellow, announced that he was no longer affiliated with the organization.

Summers became part of the leadership of the AI company, which creates the language model, in last year - following a failed attempt to remove its top executive OpenAI's head.
