Trump's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

The recent US security policy document presents a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual challenge facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap prompts a vital question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe positioned? Experts widely concede it is essentially a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations entering at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile system for funding startups. The EU still lacks a genuine unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is divided among 27 separate systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier labs. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
